Core haircut terms
- Blend: A smooth transition between different hair lengths.
- Bulk: Heavier areas of hair that may need reducing or shaping.
- Graduation: A controlled build up of weight in the haircut.
- Guideline: The first section or length used to guide the rest of the cut.
- Overdirection: Moving hair away from its natural fall to control length and shape.
- Sectioning: Dividing the hair into areas before cutting.
Clipper terms
- Guard: An attachment that controls cutting length.
- Lever: A clipper adjustment that changes blade position and fine tunes length.
- Open blade: Lever position that leaves slightly more length.
- Closed blade: Lever position that cuts closer.
- Clipper over comb: Cutting hair by lifting it with a comb and cutting against the comb.
