Beard Oil vs Beard Balm: What Is the Difference?

Beard oil and beard balm are both used for beard care, but they do different jobs.

Beard oil and beard balm are both used for beard care, but they do different jobs.

Beard oil

Beard oil is a liquid product. It is mainly used to condition the beard and the skin underneath. It can help reduce dryness and make the beard feel softer.

Best for:

  • Short beards
  • Dry skin under the beard
  • Softer feel
  • A light finish

Beard balm

Beard balm is thicker. It usually contains oils, butters and waxes. It can condition the beard while adding light control.

Best for:

  • Medium to long beards
  • Flyaway hairs
  • Light shaping
  • A more groomed finish

Can they be used together?

Some clients use both. Oil can be used for conditioning, while balm can add control. The amount should be kept modest to avoid a greasy finish.

Which should a barber recommend?

Recommend based on beard length, dryness, texture and the client's routine. A simple routine is easier for most clients to follow.

Caution

Some products contain fragrance or essential oils, which may not suit every client.
