How to Take Better Barber Portfolio Photos

Good portfolio photos help clients see the quality of your work before booking. The photo should show the haircut clearly and honestly.

Good portfolio photos help clients see the quality of your work before booking. The photo should show the haircut clearly and honestly.

Before taking the photo

  • Remove loose hair from the client and cape.
  • Style the hair properly.
  • Check the outline, blend and finish.
  • Ask the client for permission.

Lighting

Use bright, even lighting. Natural light can work well, but avoid harsh shadows. Poor lighting can hide details or make the haircut look uneven.

Angles

Useful angles include front, side, back and three quarter views. For fades, side and back views usually show the blend best.

Background

Use a clean, simple background. A cluttered station can distract from the haircut.

Editing

Keep edits minimal. Do not edit the haircut in a way that misrepresents the result.

Consistency

Use a similar setup for each photo. Consistent photos make a portfolio look more professional.

Best practice

Show real work clearly. Clients do not need perfect photography, but they do need an honest view of the result.
