Pomade is a hairstyling product used to add control, shape and often shine. It is commonly used in classic barbered styles and structured looks.

What pomade does

Pomade helps hold hair in place while giving a smoother finish. It can be used for styles such as slick backs, side parts, pompadours and neat textured looks.

Water-based pomade

Water-based pomade is usually easier to wash out than traditional oil-based pomade. It can still provide strong hold and shine depending on the formula.

Oil-based pomade

Oil-based pomade can give a classic finish and flexible hold, but it may be harder to wash out.

Hold and shine

Pomades vary by hold and shine. Some give a firm, glossy finish. Others are lighter and more natural.

Who it suits

Pomade can suit many hair types, especially when the client wants control and a polished look. Very fine hair may need a lighter product to avoid looking flat.

Barber tip

Use a small amount first. More product can be added, but too much can make the hair heavy.
