Barbers must work in a way that protects clients, staff and visitors. Requirements can vary by local authority and business setup, so barbers should check the rules that apply to their premises.

Clean and disinfect tools

Reusable tools should be cleaned and disinfected between clients using suitable products and correct contact times. Follow manufacturer instructions for tools and disinfectants.

Use single-use items correctly

Single-use blades, neck strips and similar items should be used once and disposed of safely. They should not be reused.

Manage sharps safely

Used razor blades should be placed in an appropriate sharps container. They should not be placed loose in general waste.

Keep the workplace clean

Chairs, workstations and surfaces should be cleaned regularly. Hair should be swept safely to reduce slips and mess.

Hand hygiene

Hands should be cleaned between clients and whenever needed during the service.

Check tools and electrical equipment

Tools should be maintained in good working order. Damaged equipment should not be used.

Skin and scalp checks

Do not work over broken, infected or irritated skin without suitable professional judgement. Adapt or postpone the service if needed.

Local rules

Some areas have registration, licensing or byelaw requirements for hairdressers and barbers. Check local authority guidance.
